Learn to Sew
(Introduction to sewing with a machine)
This class is aimed at people who have never used a sewing machine before.
In this class you will learn to use a sewing machine for simple projects – we will cover threading the machine, sewing seams, finishing edges, and we will make a simple re-usable shopper bag as a first project. We will provide the fabric and thread – there will be a choice of a few different designs / colours. We have 3 sewing machines available at the craft room, but if you have a machine at home and you want to learn how to use your particular machine then feel free to bring it along with you (and the instructions if you have them!)
Cost: 70 CHF
Materials: all materials are provided
Our May class is now full, there are two spaces in the June class and July classes are empty.
At these sewing project sessions you can bring your project and we will help you from beginning to end in creating your item. This could be a skirt, a top, a cushion or whatever other item you wish to sew.
You will need to bring:
- a pattern*
- any other items needed to complete the project (buttons, zips, elastic etc.)
- a box of pins
All other items can be borrowed from the craft room – but if you have your own sewing box with dressmaking shears, tape measure, stitch rippers and the like then please bring it.
*for easy household projects such as cushions, patterns are not necessary, but for any wearable items or bags, please bring a pattern. If you need help with where to find a pattern or fabric, just message us here.
Please note: the Craft Room table is not big enough for several students to cut large fabric pieces at the same time – you can come in a bit before the class time to do the cutting part alone, or we can help you so you can do it at home. Please drop us a message if you need to do some cutting (small things will be fine).
Cost: 42 CHF per class
Materials: please bring all items for your project (see class details)
To register for several sessions please add each date individually to the shopping cart by selecting a date and clicking the register now button, then checkout after you’ve added all the dates.
There are no dates for this class at the moment.
Do you have the dreaded jeans waist gap? Trousers too long? Gappy top? Bring it along and we will help you to perform simple alterations on your non-fitting clothes.
We can also show you how to sew on buttons, repair rips, and even how to darn socks the old fashioned way.
Please note that some things may not be fixable – broken zips can be difficult to replace for example, it depends on how the item was put together in the first place. Also if something is too small, we may be able to make some suggestions on how to alter it, but you may need extra fabric, and again it may not be possible.
Some alterations may be easier to do by hand sewing, other things we will do with the sewing machine – we have machines at the Craft Room to use.
Please drop us a message if you want to check that your alterations are feasible to do in class.
Cost: 52 CHF
Materials: please bring one or several items to fix and some matching thread.
Zip Pouch Bags
At this class we will make a zip up pouch bag – it can be flat or have boxed corners. Zip pouches are endlessly useful – use them for everything from makeup bags to storing your phone charger to putting your knitting project in. You must know the basics of using a sewing machine for this class, but no special skills are needed.
Cost: 65 CHF
Materials: We provide a selection of fabrics, if you would rather choose your own then please let us know and we can adjust the price accordingly and let you know how much fabric to bring.
Sew a simple summer skirt with us!
We will use the NewLook pattern number 6492 – which has options for straight or A-line skirts (length is adaptable) in sizes from 34 up to 46 the straight skirt can also have a “flounce” at the bottom and the A-Line skirt can have an optional sheer overlay. We provide the pattern, but you will need to choose and purchase the fabric and notions (zip, thread etc.) Because the amount of fabric you need will depend on which style of skirt you want to make and your dress size, please use the form below to register and we can give you further details about what you will need to buy and where you can get it.
This is a 3 part class, great as a first dressmaking project – you need to know the basics of using a sewing machine, but no other special skills are needed.
Dates: Tuesday evenings (6pm to 8pm):
22nd May: adjusting and reading the pattern, cutting fabric (you may need to finish this at home)
29th May: sewing main parts of the skirt
5th June: finishing, zip, making final adjustments (hem).
